About

This animation is generated by a cyclic cellular automaton. Each iteration of the automaton, a cell of color i becomes color i+1 exactly when one of its neighbors (in the Moore neighborhood) is color i+1, and otherwise does nothing. Each cycle of the animation is initialized using a random seed and a randomly chosen template. Moving the mouse around leaves a trail by incrementing the color of the area underneath. Most runs of this animation end up with radiating "devil" spirals that compete for dominance of the screen.
